In der Spielzeit 1734-1735 brachte Händel am Covent Garden Theatre sowohl Ariodante als auch Alcina heraus. Die Libretti der beiden Opern illustrieren zwei Episoden des Orlando furioso (Der rasende Roland; 1516/32) von Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533). Diese wunderbare epische Dichtung, welche mit der tradierten Bilderwelt der Ritterzeit ein freies Spiel treibt, war mehrere Jahrhunderte lang das Vorbild für das Genre der heroisch-komischen Verserzählung.
Das „dramma per musica“ in drei Aufzügen Alcina ist dem sechsten und siebenten Gesang des Orlando furioso entnommen. Händel scheint diese Oper während der Zeit der harten Auseinandersetzungen mit dem rivalisierenden Theaterunternehmen im April 1735 komponiert zu. Uraufgeführt wurde Alcina bereits am 16. desselben Monats. Trotz der widrigen Aufführungsumstände wurden nur wenige Bühnenwerke Händels zu seinen Lebzeiten häufiger aufgeführt oder mehr bewundert als Alcina.

Catherine Naglestad's Alcina is a complex figure - regal, headstrong and even somewhat sympathetic.
